An early start with politics
At the age of 19, Mr. Castro became the youngest candidate for public office in the history of Webb County, Texas, when we successful petitioned the public to place his name on the ballot for Webb County Commission in 2003.
Although he lost that election, John triggered an anti-corruption campaign that eventually resulted in the arrest and resignation of multiple public officials as well as the election of a former FBI agent to the Office of the Mayor of the city.
“I was still in college living at home when I ran for office, but I never ran with the intent to win. The intent was to wake people up about the corruption in the city and to show them that, if a teenage college student could challenge and shake the local power structure, anyone could.”
